The metropolitan public prosecutor (MPP) recommended on 20 July 2009 withdrawal of a case filed against Moudud considering it to be “politically motivated” and meant for “harassment”. Over 2 years since Moudud was first arrested and then kept illegally in jail!

Moudud Ahmed was finally freed on 1 December 2008. After spending 20 months in jail, the last month of which was in solitary confinement. Every single day he was in jail was illegal as it was under the Emergency Powers Act.

What did the Military do in 24 months in power: NOTHING BUT HARM. They simply took away 24 months of freedom from the people and made a mess of the economy. In Moudud's case all they have done is made it impossible for him to continue serving his beloved Noakhali constituency.

On 16 July 2008 the HC, quite rightly, said that all ordinances issued by A.I President NOT RELATING to elections were illegal. The very nature of an emergency regime acting under the constitution is that it has to do so legally. Which this military regime has no intention of doing.

On 16 July the Attorney General Fida Kamal resigned.  He is said to have said "No person of honour can serve this present Military Regime". Quite right!

MOUDUD'S TRIAL BY A KANGAROO COURT STARTED ON 26 MAY 2008 UNDER THE 'WEALTH' CHARGES. MOUDUD IS NOT BEING ALLOWED ANY LAWYERS AND IN HIS OWN WORDS (PLEASE SEE THE SECTION 'MOUDUD'S WORDS) IT IS OBVIOUS THAT HE IS FULLY INNOCENT.

THE PETTY MILITARY REGIME RUN BY THE TOY SOLDIER GENERAL MOEEN IS DETERMINED TO ELIMINATE THE ENTIRE POLITICAL CLASS AND SYSTEM IN BANGLADESH. RIGHT NOW POLITICAL LEADERS REPRESENTING 91% OF THE VOTES OBTAINED AT THE LAST ELECTIONS ARE IN JAIL. KANGAROO COURTS ARE IN FULL SWING AND HUMAN RIGHTS AND THE RULE OF LAW ARE SIMPLY OBJECTS FOR THE MILITARY TO TOSS OUT OF THE WINDOW WHILE THEY MISMANAGE THE COUNTRY AND STRUT ON THE WORLD STAGE. CORRUPTION (ONE OF THE TWO REASONS THE ARMY GAVE FOR COMING TO POWER) HAS SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED UNDER THE PRESENT MILITARY REGIME. POOR BANGLADESH.

This site exists to promote the cause of freeing Moudud Ahmed, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, who was arrested on 13 April 2007 by the 'interim' military backed government of Bangladesh. Moudud was arrested on the flimsiest of charges, and the real purpose was obviously to take out of political life a long term commited believer in the rule of law in a democratic society. Moudud was formally 'shown as arrested' on 29 December 2007 (some 8 1/2 months after being arbitrarily jailed) on the basis of the flimsy charges laid against Moudud on 3 December. The original charges which were the basis of his summary arrest in April 2007 now appear to have been completely ignored, showing the legal validity of these!  On 15 March 2008 the US Department of State in its annual "Human Rights Practices 2007" stated that 'the filing of charges against former Law Minister Moudud Ahmed were seen as politically motivated" (which they certainly were!) and on 22 March 2008 National Public Radio of the USA ran a news broadcast about the poor state of human rights in Bangladesh (see news  for the link which will allow you to listen to this broadcast). In May 2008, some 13 months after his original night time arrest and detention in April 2007,  Moudud was charged with amassing wealth beyond his means and charged in the so called NIKO case. Both these charges are unsubstantiated, and in the NIKO case the so called government has not even offered witnesses or evidence. Our section on NIKO gives Moudud's own defence on the NIKO allegations.

The Interim Caretaker government of Bangladesh has now been ruling the country since January 2007, some 18 months, and its economic and political performance has been woeful. The country is sinking deeper into economic and political morass whilst the real politicians and political parties, whose job after all is to rule the country under law and look after the present and future well being of the nation, remain under house arrest whilst the present Military Dictator plays at visiting the world as effective Head of State of Bangladesh.

When Moudud's elder brother, Masud Ahmed, died in late December 2007, Moudud was given a heavily guarded 12 hour parole to attend the burial. To say that the present military regime in Bangladesh is vicious is a severe understatement.

The section labelled 'Moudud's words' is information which  reached us directly from Moudud himself a few months ago. It makes very distressing reading, both about Moudud and about what it says for the situation of Justice in Bangladesh.

On the 29th of October the Supreme Court of Bangladesh confirmed the 12th of September High Court ruling that Moudud's detention was illegal, and ordered that he should be released. Which the military regime has refused to do. The moment the Supreme Court issued its ruling (3 December 2007) the present Military Regime simply threw fresh, completely unsubstantiated, charges at Moudud under the illegal Emergency Powers Act so that the Military could keep Moudud in jail, thereby thwarting the clearly expressed views of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.

'Moudud Ahmed c.v., health,  and worlds' tells the story of his political life, and also talks about his state of health (which prison detention is putting at risk) and shows the messages we have received from Moudud from his jail.

'Bangladesh history'' gives an overview of the troubled political life of Bangladesh since Independence,

'Military Dictatorship and Corruption' talks about the harm being done to Bangladesh by the present Military Regime and its increasing Corruption.

'Help Moudud' shows the text of a petition that you could send to the military regime asking for Moudud to be released. It also gives contact email for us.

'NIKO case' gives facts about the ridiculous brought against Moudud under this heading.

'Economist 5 June 2008' is a very sober even handed article from the Economist about the present situation in Bangladesh.

You are visitor number  since the  10th of September 2007. please use this site and tell your friends, as public pressure is one of the best ways to get the present Military Regime in Bangladesh to hand power back to the democratic political parties and to the people.
