You can help Moudud in a number of ways, perhaps the most important being to lobby Members of your national government on behalf of Moudud and democracy in Bangladesh. See, for example, below a petition which has recently been sent to various legal bodies showing the international support that already exists for Moudud's release and for the return of Democractic Politics and the Rule of law in Bangladesh. In the Feedback section of this website there is the address of the Chief Advisor where you can contact him:

"AN APPEAL TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY
AND THE CITIZENS OF BANGLADESH.

Friends,

We already feel encouraged to see that the international community and citizens of Bangladesh at large are gradually realising that an unelected and unaccountable government should not continue for long to govern the country and the people must have their own elected government as early as possible. So the emergency should be withdrawn to restore the rights of people without any further delay. The statements issued by 15 highly respected US Senators, 52 MPs of Canada, 15 MPs and Lords of Great Britain, MPs of the European Union and many other countries and the Secretary General of the Commonwealth have expressed the same views. They have also expressed their concern about the human rights violations. While the drive against corruption is appreciated, but victimisation of respectable politicians and businessmen by instituting trumped-up cases are not acceptable. The trials must be fair and transparent under the existing laws and not under the Emergency Rules.
On behalf of the
CONCERNED CITIZENS
of Bangladesh "

You can also help Moudud Ahmed by sending a fax to the Principal Secretary of the Chief Advisor (ie the effective Prime Minister) to the following fax number: +8802 8113244:

"We call upon the Interim Caretaker Government of Bangladesh to respect the 20 August 2007decision of the High Court of Bangladesh to set free Moudud Ahmed from his arbitrary and illegal imprisonment in Dhaka jail where he has been held since 13 May 2007.

We know that former Prime Minister and Vice President of Bangladesh Moudud Ahmed has been fighting for democracy and the rule of law in Bangladesh his whole adult life, and his political career is the expression of this. Moudud's contribution to the Bangladesh Liberation War was immense and has been well recognized by the International Community and within Bangladesh he has often been recognized by the Media as  best Parliamentarian.

Moudud was arrested on 13 April 2007 under the Emergency Power Rules, after a 12 hour long raid on his house by a joint Army and police team which then charged him with 'smuggling 14 bottles of wine and 34 cans of beer' (this is the charge which the High Court has ordered to be dismissed). Moudud was then taken to an unknown destination for three days and his family alleges that during that time he was tortured, and since then Moudud has not been allowed free access to his lawyers for consultations.

Moudud is 67 years old and needs urgent medical care as he had complicated surgery several years ago and the dosage of medicines needs to be constantly adjusted and Moudud is life dependent on drugs and consultations not available in Bangladesh.

Moudud is a long standing friend and supporter of the USA and Britain and has the rare distinction of being a former visiting fellow at Harvard University, Oxford University, Heidelberg University, and the Elliot School of International Affairs at George Washington University.

In these troubled times Bangladesh needs its leading constitutional lawyer and a committed Democrat and Patriotic leader.

Moudud should be set free since the High Court and the Supreme Court have ruled that his detention has no basis in law."
